| Doreen’s unique blend of formal qualifications, hands-on knowledge of and personal experience with every aspect of birth, babies and parenthood, means that she was ideally suited to starting her own business, sharing her knowledge with mothers to be and their partners. Through her one-day Saturday antenatal classes and her post natal consultations, Doreen explores every aspect of pregnancy from preparing for and giving birth, to bringing your new baby home and coping with lack of sleep.
From Midwife To National Baby Care Expert
Doreen began her career as a nurse in Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe in 1970. Over the intervening years Doreen worked in many and varied roles (as highlighted below) both in Ireland and overseas, but in 2000 she decided that it was time to share her vast knowledge with parents to be, in order to help them better cope with the transition into parenthood. In 2007, Doreen presented a TV show on RTE called “Baby on Board” and this led to a number of other appearances on shows such as “The Afternoon Show” and “Ireland AM”. Doreen’s expertise is also in demand in the written form and she has contributed articles to “Your New Baby” magazine, “The Irish Independent”, “The Irish Examiner”, “The Irish Times”, “Parenting Today” magazine and most notably for a parenting supplement in the “RTE Guide”.
Doreen’s approach to teaching is friendly, informal and discussion-based. She does not use videos, but prefers to talk you through the experience you are about to have, pausing for individual questions and providing notes for each area of the antenatal class. She also engages in practical exercises; because as Doreen puts it, “Doing is twice as valuable as seeing or hearing”. Her expertise in teaching was gained during her time as an instructor to the Irish Nurses Organisation, teaching on all aspects of parentcraft.
Most importantly Doreen is a mother herself and so has experienced the very real trials and tribulations that parenthood brings for herself, which allows her to give very real and practical advice during her classes and not just the theory.
Finally, Doreen has a passion for continued learning (see below) and has added qualifications in reflexology, holistic massage, infant massage and parent mentoring.
